I use to draw trees to relax. I felt that the process might again be comforting so I drew a tree today.
Final bid 1310 credits. This card is going to a new person in New York.

I was inspired today by the hanging incandescent bulbs behind the pastor. But they were too simple so they became this. I had the larger one and there was a lot of empty space in the card so I added the baby. It was Ash who said they needed hair. I think it was a good idea. I think it's interesting when you think of the controversy over incandescent lights. If they are so bad for the environment then some people would see these creatures as terrible monsters... right?
Final bid 2020. This card is going to Minnesota. Name: Bugaboo and Bugaboo Jr. Today's card was inspired by a drawing that my son did this morning. I included his drawing at the bottom of the blog so you can see where I found this little creature. It was challenging to try to mimic his lines and I'm not sure I got it quite right but I do like the final image. I did add a few tiny bits like the other arm and inside the eyes. Kaleb is only 20 months old and he was just enjoying creating lines on the paper, so expressive and free! I happened to have it learning up by my computer while I was working and I noticed the eyes and mouth of this creature. I would not be personally inclined to put them so close together and it seems that I even pushed them a bit farther apart than he had put them. I think there is a wonderful personality to it. Thanks for looking!
Final bid 1017 credits. This card will be going to Michigan. Name: Mr. G. Ardener, Feeper of the Kowers. My head has not liked me today. Maybe it was being put right next to the speakers last night, or the 1.5 drinks I had, I don't know but today I did not feel good or very happy. I tried really hard to think of the positives from last night and to try to concentrate on those. Overall it was a learning experience. I made a few new artist friends which was the highlight of my day to be sure. I almost sold one piece but their card wouldn't work and then they dissappeared. I was able to give out a few cards and you never know if those will work out or not.
I had to get some nylons at the store becuase of bruising my knee the other day. I found some that were nice and on sale but when I got ready to put them on I realized I hadn't paid attention to the color. They wouldn't work so I had to go back to the store before heading to the show. It put me about 30 min after everyone else got there. They put me in the corner, which I didn't realize would be a bad spot until the show started. I also forgot my lighting and it was often rather dark where I was. All the tables had been taken but a little one so I got some circle tables and the little one. There were these pole setups we were supposed to use but the only one left was in pieces and I was supposed to put it together myself. That didn't work out for me. So it was what it was. None of the people I invited showed up as far as I know. It was not the best atmosphere for trying to sell fine art. But you live you learn. From now on I'm sticking to commissions online and galleries. But I did make some friends :) Sometimes things happen that we don't quite understand why, but later God shows us what He had in mind and it's awesome. I'm trying to think positively. Final bid 414. This card will be going to California. To a person who was, for a time, a mystery bidder. Revealed today to be a very old friend from middle school. What a wonderful surprise. So I actually ran out of time last night trying to get ready for my show and didn't start this card until this morning in the dental office waiting room. I had a partial deep cleaning done. About half my face was numbed and it went well. I like the Va dental clinics. They are very gentle and nice. I think women make great dentist because of their smaller hands. I've had a big man hand trying to work in my mouth before and it was just miserable for me. Plus these ladies are very supportive of my art. My card was sitting on the wall equipment smiling back at me when I got there. I go back in next week for more filling and cleanings. They are trying to get all my work done before I move, which I really appreciate. I'd much rather go see them then anyone else.
I have to go get cleaned up and dressed for my show now! Final bid 606 credits. This card is going to New York. I didn't get started on this card until after picking up my daughter from school and it was a struggle to get it into it's final form. If you look closely you can see some marks around the neck that I couldn't get off from one of the renditions I didn't stick with. This morning Ash had a late start school day, after dropping her off I went to my friend Linda's and tried on some of her and her daughters dresses for my show tomorrow. The show is cocktail attire and the only dress I have was from high school and doesn't fit anymore. There was a dress that Linda had purchased some time ago but never wore. It is brown and very cute. After trying on a few we decided that the brown dress was the best and we found some shoes that would look good with it. She told me that since she never would wear the dress and she had never worn the shoes that I could have them! I'm so excited to wear them to the show tomorrow. The shoes are beautiful vintage Kenneth Cole orange heals. I'm bringing flats to wear when I set up and take down and in case I can't last in the heals all night. I will try to get a picture from the event to show you after the fact. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my card done and up tomorrow. I might actually try to make part of it tonight since I have so very much to do with the show. I have to be there all ready at 4pm and won't get done tell after 11:30pm. I had won some shoes with wheels in them on listia. I thought it might be fun to wear them when I went to pick up Ash from school today. On my way there, crossing the street, one of my legs went out from under me and I did the splits bruising and roughing up one knee as I slid on the pavement. I felt so dumb. Since I had pants on there wasn't much damage but I can still feel a substantial bruise. I'll have to see what it looks like tomorrow. I was going to have silky smooth legs for the show, but with my silly accident I might just buy a pair of nylons and go with that instead. I have to find a home for those shoes. I don't know how anyone manages to wear them. Ouch :( Final bid 631 credits. This card was won by a gentleman in Michigan for the second highest bidder who lives in Alabama. God is so good! Happy Valentines day!
I started the card today with a heart in honor of todays holiday. At first I made the heart into a head shape with cartoon style eyes, a neck and even a hand making the sign language sign for "I love you." It looked REALLY cheesy and I just wan't satisfied. So I erased it back down to the heart and began to break it. I made the bottom crack and shaded it. Then I started making circles. The circles gave a nice delineation between the areas but I still had to make it into some sort of creature. I decided to make the top area and almost finished the circles save the white area that became the eyes. It looked like a strange egg that seems more soft then brittle. I love making the circle patterns. Add a little shading to it and it transforms beautifully. There were naturally areas in the circles that wanted to be darker or lighter so I just went with it and this is the outcome :) Final bid 656 credits. This card is going to Florida. Hello! Today has been a very productive and positive day. I listed some screen printing supplies on craigslist since I don't ever use them anymore, I could really use the funds for moving, and it would make for less to move. They sold today after only being posted for a few days. I used square to do the purchase with a credit card. Technology is so impressive. I can just enter the information into my phone and take care of the whole transaction without one of those machines. The days are fast approaching for my show and this new square technology will really come in handy. I should be getting this little attachment for a card reader right before the show. It will make it even easier.
I spent the morning on this card and I find it to be very interesting. I especially like the way the furry part turned out. I like that there are almost a few different ways to look at it. I enjoy the mild ambiguity. The Listia.com e-newsletter came out this evening as well. I was featured as the newest Listia All-Star! They put a picture of me with my cards in the article and included information about the creature card project! I even got a special star badge for my account. It is such a wonderful honor :) In appreciation of this wonderfully momentous occasion I have made a special premium listing for a custom creature card. This is the only time I will offer one on Listia. Here is the link to win the custom card. I am intrigued to see how this all-star opportunity will affect my Listia experience and the card auctions. Final bid 1010 credits. Going to Michigan. Name: Miss Lilly This is another drawing inspired by my church service. I started by sketching a flower on the new drapery that was behind the pastor, then turned it into this creature. The number 12 is frequently used in the Bible and there are also creatures mentioned that are covered in eyes. This one isn't covered in eyes but resembles the way a peacock will have eyes on the feathers, but these eyes would work like I imagine the seraphim's would. For those who think I'm not paying attention in church I'd like to mention that the right side of the brain is the creative side and the left side is the part that takes notes :) At least for me they both can work pretty well at the same time. The lesson I learned today was that I don't have to be powerful for God to use me. He works best with the weak. 2 Corinthians 12: 10 says "That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
It has been positive working with Listia clients. I have meet so many fellow Christians and have been very encouraged by it! I was told recently that I should also make a coloring book of some of the more simple creatures at the end of this year. I like the idea. This would be a good card for that book. Final bid 303 credits. This card is going to Minnesota. It's name is the Mystarclopanextrasaurus! :) Graphite on 2.5" x 3.5" smooth bristol paper
I spent a lot of time today on this one! I really hope all the effort paid off in a successful piece. I am very happy with it. I wasn't expecting to have the character rip out of the paper but once I started on the claws that is just what developed so I went with it. I've been trying to get caught up on all the cards I need to finish that were purchased as tickets to my show, and I'm also trying to get rid of as much of my stuff as I can so I have less to move in march. We are moving down to Newport! I'm so excited. Hopefully, I get some bites on my craigslist posts soon. Every little bit helps! Final bid 1010 credits. This card will be going to Washington. |
