The Creature Card Creation project is a personal goal of mine I began January 4th 2012 that required me to push myself artistically and personally. The initial goal was to make an Original work of art every day for a year and give them away because I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to own an original work of art. The project also encourages me to create every day, practicing and honing my skills. I am stepping outside my comfort zone by meeting new people daily and letting go of my creations quickly. I have even been able to bond with my family while they assist me in the art making process, or make their own creature cards. After completing six months of creatures I came to the realization that I could no longer afford to create the work for free and suspended the project. I am requesting your help in finishing the last 6 months of the project so that the cards can still be given away with no cost to the recipient.
One creature will be created each day and given away through a free drawing system on my website. All supporters are warmly encouraged to participate in the project and will have the opportunity (like everyone else) to win a free Original Creature Card. At the end of each day a blog post will be done including the Creature of the day. Anyone interested in winning that days work need only comment on the blog within a week. At the end of the week all the names will be placed into a hat and one will be given the card. Everyone will only be able to win one creature per month, but comments will always be welcome. Winners are encouraged to collaborate with the project by choosing a name and any other information about the creature that they would like to provide. All information will be included on the creature's blog and in the compilation book (to be created at the end of the project). Your support will allow the project to continue for the remaining six months. The initial proposed goal will help cover supplies and shipping costs. If the project is successfully funded the six months of cards will begin January 4th 2013. If the funding is not achieved in the one month time limit you will not be charged for your donation, you will not receive your reward bonus and the project will end without the remaining six months of cards. |
How did the Creature Card Creation project begin?
I'm so glad you asked! Starting January 3rd I began to explore a website I had recently been recommended to. The site is Lisita.com. It is a new form of auction based loosely on the barter system, heavily controlled by supply and demand. Once I started to understand the premise of the site I fell in love. Inspired by another portrait artist's auction I had a deep desire to post work on the site for trade. Since I'm so slow at making portraits it didn't seem as effective to post portraits for bidding; however, it had been so long since I sat down and doodled I came up with the idea to draw a doodle a day for posting. What better a New Year's resolution then to draw something every day for a whole year, and give it away! I choose to draw them initially on 3 x 5 index cards for a couple reasons. I have a bunch I'm not using and they fit into a regular size envelope making them relatively inexpensive to mail. The goal of these drawing's is to spread art among the people in an affordable way. What better way than to give them away free! There are additional benefits as well. The process encourages me to draw every day, practicing and honing my skills. I am stepping outside my comfort zone by meeting new people daily and letting go of my creations. I have found this to be an exciting experiment and I am learning so much. There is no way of knowing where this year could take me!
There is lots of information in my blog of each card the day they come into existence, including my thoughts and the lessons I am learning. Check it out when you get a chance!
Over time the shipping costs will begin to be burdensome on my limited "starving" artist budget. Considering this support page was created. I will attempt to draw a Support card twice a month in addition to the daily cards and my other commissions. These support cards will be available here for purchase. The funds will go directly to sustaining the project. These support cards will be inexpensive as well, but on quality paper and in color! Stop by from time to time to see what gem's are available. There is also a donation option if you would like to help buy a 65c stamp or support in a more substantial way. Thanks for your time, encouragement, and support.
