Making a Splotch with Kaleb and Rhonda

1/28/2013

A friend of mine mentioned he was trying his hand at splotch and was having a little trouble with it. I remembered having made this video a while back for a friend. After watching it I realized both cards featured have been finished this month. I didn't realize Kaleb had worked on those splotches. Because of that I've decided to share this with everyone. The first person to name both card days correctly in a comment, will win a creature ATC print of their choice for Free!
Here are just a couple extra points.
It's nice to get a lot of color on the brush, but you will find a variety of techniques create a diverse group of splotches. I stuck two of mine together to let them dry. It created some neat effects (Day 9.) I've also used a penny sleeve to smear them (Day 20). Some have been just a few swipes of a color loaded brush (Splotch Creature Dragonfly #67.) Have fun. I look forward to seeing what you come up with! You can share them with me here.

:) I'm thinking if I tell you how wrong you are that would be like playing mastermind and giving clues... I'd kinda like to see if anyone can get it without clues. Of course for me I've seen them before they were so I can't really gauge the difficulty of the challenge. I can say i was surprised to see the way they were created based on the outcome. I'll start to give out a clue a day tomorrow if no one gets it.

DING DING DING DING! :) We have a winner. Congratulations you win a free creature ATC print of your choice. Nice detective work.

This video shows the making of Chris and Jorie's cards. I thought they might enjoy seeing it. Now I just have to remember to tell them.

Thank you so much! I feel so honored! I would like a free print of the first one you sent to Listia, the detective guy with the mustache

Ah yes. "Monsieur Detective" (in a british accent) Very nice choice.

Also featured on the Shop > Creature Inventory > Creatures by Medium > Splotch page Creature # 43 :) A link would probably be easier.

wow i totally would never have guessed that!! i guess day 16 makes sense bc of the leg at the edge of the card, but it was the coloring that threw me off! lol i think its bc i shouldve kept in mind that gouche becomes lighter in color when it dries! but nice on the win Brenda :)) Im glad you were able to get the print of the card that you wanted, if anything :]]

thank you, Chris. I was actually thinking of Boop at the start, too. day 16 was easier than day 6.

I watched the uncut version of the film and there is a little more working that happens to number 6 for the piece coming off the head which would have made it easier to find. You still did it though! Good job.

I was really surprised at the colors used too lol. I had a little "Hey that's my bird card?!" moment when I was watching it. They do dry differently. There is enough color in the brush that the colors will interact as they dry. When he puts purple on the brush it doen't actually show up in the picture. I think this is part of my lack of knowledge of colors. I tend to paint straight out of the tube a lot.
